A French-American artist based in Brooklyn, Leila Bordreuil embraces the cello as a primary medium for crafting an intense music that moves fluidly between noise, contemporary composition, improvisation, and drone, without anchoring itself to their more canonical definitions. Challenging conventional approaches to the instrument, Bordreuil makes meticulous and forceful use of amplification, summoning torrents of noise, stretches of tense stillness, and a melancholic aura that courses through her sonic flow. Unaffiliated with scenes or manifestos, she has collaborated with a diverse range of artists such as Laurel Halo, Bill Nace, and Tamio Shiraishi, revealing a panoramic vision of form and genre. “1991, Summer, Huntington Garage Fire”, released last year by Aaron Dilloway’s Hanson Records, is a faithful portrait of her fearless exploration of the communicative space between visceral impact and hypnotic immersion.
